<![CDATA[An example of a traditional poppet head. There are a number of these around Bendigo with crushers, boilers and other mining equipment. They are key reminders of the gold mining heritage of Bendigo. Poppet heads were used to lift ore and waste from the mines and to control the descent of cages carrying the miners to the mine face.
Bendigo has hundreds of old mines deep under its City streets. You can tour one of these underground mines at the Central Deborah Goldmine, in the heart of Bendigo. It is located on Creek Street North, close to the Calder Highway and is one terminus for the Bendigo Tramways.
You can visit the collection of working mine equipment, interpretative displays or try panning for gold on the surface. Regular tours take you down the lift shaft into a unique experience where you are shown the old mine workings.

<![CDATA[The Alexandra Fountain is made from local Harcourt Granite and was named after Alexandra, Princess of Wales. It is located in the centre of Bendigo on Pall Mall.
Bendigo was previously known as Castleton and Sandhurst. Its importance grew dramatically with the discovery of alluvial gold in 1851. Vast amounts of gold have been found on the surface or in ever deeper mines. Gold mining is still occurring in and around Bendigo.
The wealth of the Goldfields has resulted in a city with a superb collection of Victorian architecture. Subsequent wealth from agriculture and industry enabled the city to continue its heritage of attractive architecture. The mixture of nationalities present in the Region is reflected in the style of the CityÆs many heritage buildings, parks and Reserves. ]]></ss_content>

Opened in 1991, the Golden Dragon Museum aims to collect, preserve and care for materials of cultural significance to the Chinese community, relevant to the goldfields region of Victoria.
Unique to the MuseumÆs collection and on permanent display are Loong and Sun Loong, the worlds oldest and longest Imperial dragons, along with their accompanying processional regalia eg. Colourful flags & hand embroidered banners, costumes & lanterns. This living collection is used annually in the Bendigo Easter Procession, to raise money for local charities since 1871. Loong, the oldest dragon was also used in 1901, in Melbourne, to mark the opening of AustraliaÆs first federal parliament!
Sun Loong was brought from Hong Kong to replace Loong in 1970. He was created by Lo On Kee, a traditional dragon builder. Sun Loong is the longest Imperial Dragon in the world., being over 100 metres in length. Requiring 52 people (plus 52 reliefs) to carry him. Sun Loong is covered in 4,500 scales, 90,000 mirrors, 30,000 beads and his head weights 29kg. Before he appeared in 1970, he was blessed and brought to life by 101 years old Mr James Lew, dotting his eyes with chicken blood. Sun Loong was awoken to accompany Loong- in LoongÆs last Bendigo Easter procession in 1970.

These two story, elaborate, buildings date from the days when Bendigo had considerable gold wealth in its public coffers. The old Post Office and Law Courts were both designed by the same architect and were built between 1883 and 1896.
The interior of the Law Courts contain a superb staircase and court room and are fine examples of the style of the time.]]></ss_content>
<![CDATA[Located on Tramways Avenue, the historic working tram depot stores, restores and maintains trams for the tours around the City. Trams can be caught at the Central Deborah Mine, Fountain, Lake Weeroona, Joss House and of course, the Depot.

<![CDATA[The building was originally a Masonic Hall whose foundations were laid in 1873. It retains the classical beauty both inside and outside and the building has recently been restored. It has dramatic Corinthian Columns outside the front of the building on View Street, only a few blocks away from the Alexandra Fountain.

The Gallery has an extensive collection of art from the colonial period to current works. It has improved wheelchair access, shop and cafe.
<![CDATA[The Sacred Heart Cathedral is adjacent to the Midland Highway only a few blocks away from the Alexandra Fountain in the centre of the City.
The foundations were laid in 1897 and work has been ongoing, with the Bells installed as recently as 2001. Its design is English Gothic, providing a large, open space with an airy feeling.
Apart from its religious importance to the Bendigo community, this is a beautiful building with good examples of stained glass, timberwork and local as well as Italian stone.]]></ss_content>

The Pottery provides the opportunity to buy modern or traditional styled pottery surrounded by an atmosphere imbued with the heritage of this Heritage Listed site.
The Pottery commenced in 1857, but manufacturing has been carried out on this site from 1864, with the display area and retail outlet a later addition. The site is attractively landscaped with a complex of heritage buildings also providing the setting for several galleries providing other local products.
The display area shows a wide variety of current products and also provides an opportunity to see traditional kilns and frequent displays of making pottery by hand. The visitor can also visit an interpretative display showing traditional kilns and equipment as well as a display of pottery manufactured since the potteryÆs establishment.

The building currently houses a very informative Visitor Information Service and displays on local history and events.

The Convent Gallery was built as a residence in the 1860s and later purchased by the Church for use as a convent and a boarding school. Tina Banitska purchased the property in 1989 and has subsequently restored the building and gardens to the present high standard.
The Convent Gallery has seven galleries showing traditional and contemporary paintings, prints, glassware, and other beautiful items made by local and international artists. Set in glorious gardens, the Convent also has a cafe, bar, function rooms and apartment.

Tuki Retreat is a special getaway situated on historic ôStoney Risesö, a traditional grazing property. The woolshed, minerÆs cottage and stable restaurant are original buildings. The area has been farmed for over 150 years.

It commemorates the victory in the First World War. The adjacent Temple of Remembrance contains the names of each soldier in whose honour a tree was planted in the adjacent Avenue of Honour. The Temple of Remembrance also contains the names of those who served in the Second World War.
The æLucas GirlsÆ were again integral in fundraising and also planting the Avenue of Honour. 22 Km long, it contains one tree with plaque for every local resident who became a soldier in the First World War. The 3,771 trees were planted from 1917 to 1919.]]></ss_content>

<![CDATA[Kryal Castle is located about 1 Km south of the Western Highway, approximately 8 Km from Ballarat towards Melbourne.
This magnificent bluestone mediaeval styled castle on the slopes of Mount Warrenheip. It dominates the local scenery and provides good views over the surrounding countryside. It has castle walls, towers, moat and drawbridge along with various activities inside.
The visitor has the opportunity to see a number of historic displays as well as guided tours, tavern, restaurant and accommodation.

<![CDATA[The Statuary Pavilion was built in 1888 and has been recently restored. It houses a fine collection of Colonial statues.
The development of the Gardens site commenced in 1858, and included the conversion of Yuille's Swamp into Lake Wendouree. At inception, much of the plant stock originated from the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, resulting in a large collection of exotic trees and plants in the European tradition.]]></ss_content>

<![CDATA[The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery is located at 40 Lydiard Street North and is Australia's oldest and largest regional gallery.
The Gallery is a mixture of a beautiful heritage building constructed in 1884 and a modern wing. The Gallery houses a superb collection of paintings as well as regularly having an active programme of exhibitions, workshops and concerts.
The collection includes contemporary art through to colonial works, costumes and sculpture. Since 1895, the Gallery has held the original Eureka Flag, which is on public display, an important link with AustraliaÆs past. There is also a gallery devoted to the work of the Lindsay family.
A cafe and shop, free guided tours and wheelchair access are also provided.

Additionally it assisted in the development of trade and manufacturing in this area. The station is on Lydiard Street, a well preserved and beautiful collection of heritage buildings.

December 1854 saw the Eureka Rebellion and the battle of the Eureka Stockade.

<![CDATA[Talbot is a small town between Maryborough and Clunes. Its peak was during the early days of the goldrush when its population rose to about 15, 000.
Like many similar towns there has been a drift of people away from the town since the 1850s. There are a number of attractive heritage buildings in the town.]]></ss_content>
<![CDATA[A well maintained example of a log cabin style lock up for imprisoning offenders is located on Bucknall Street. Believed to have been built around 1852 on the Police Reserve and moved to this location in 1886. The roof was originally made of shingles but this has been replaced by corrugated iron.
The lock up contains a museum of local history.]]></ss_content>

It was believed that it would remain a significant town and a number of substantial and attractive buildings were constructed and form part of the towns heritage. The most famous of these heritage buildings is the railway station located in Station Street, off Burns Street. <![CDATA[Llanelly is a small town on the Wimmera Highway to the East of Tarnagulla. Typical of many small towns in this Region its early population has slowly declined with the end of the goldrush and changes in agriculture.

The Welcome Stranger Nugget was found at this site in 1869 near Moliagul, a small town on the Wimmera Highway, approximately 15 kilometres North of Dunolly. The nugget weighed about 72 Kg and its site is now marked by this monument in a Reserve.]]></ss_content>

<![CDATA[Melville Caves are located in a Kooyoora Park to the South West of Inglewood on the Calder Highway. This is an attractive park with a long history of human occupation from local aboriginal people to the gold rush.
Numerous remains provide the evidence of aboriginal life in the area, and the caves are supposed to have been the haunt of ôCaptain Melvilleö who was a bush ranger in the area during the local gold rush.]]></ss_content>
